Deniballs are made from a special biologically based plastic material. In the absence of oxygen, anaerobic bacteria metabolize this material. The bacteria are used for the reduction of nitrates - reducing nitrate to nitrogen gas. One to three Pyramid packages of 0.8 litres (c. 0.2 gal) each is enough to supply the Nitratreductor as the sole food source for 12 months. For the Nitratreductor 5000, about 5 litres (1.3 gallons) are required.
